We quote the board and the glazing. Everyone else quotes the wood.

A frame is a moulding, a mount, a sheet of glazing and a backing board. Buyers compare the moulding, because it is the only part they can see.
The two parts that actually decide whether the artwork looks the same in fifteen years are the two that disappear the moment the frame is closed.
After those, one number settles most of the rest: the depth of the lip everything has to sit in.
Why we exist
Frames are ordered by a size name and specified by a finish, and the two things that decide the outcome — the board grade and the glazing — are almost never on the quote.
Both are settled before anything is cut, and neither costs much.
Acidic board burns the artwork
Ordinary mount board prints a brown line into the edge of whatever it touches within a few years. It is called mat burn and it is permanent.
Alkaline-buffered, lignin-free board prevents it entirely, and it is a fraction of what the moulding costs.
Ordinary glass lets ultraviolet through
Which is why one corner of a framed print goes pale and nobody can explain it: that is where the daylight lands.
UV-filtering glazing fixes it. We also say when it is not worth it — a laser print in a windowless corridor does not need it.
The rebate is the number nobody asks for
Glazing, mount, artwork and backing all have to fit inside one lip. If the stack is deeper than the lip, the backing sits proud and forcing it bows the moulding.
So we ask what is going in, and quote the rebate in millimetres against the measured stack rather than against a size name.
Three sizes, not one
Artwork size is the sheet. Sight size is what the mount leaves visible, about five millimetres in from each edge. Outside size is what the wall has to take.
Treating them as one number is what makes reorders arrive wrong.
Hanging is where frames actually fail
Past roughly A2 with glass in it, a sawtooth hanger and a nail is not adequate. D-rings with rated cord, or a flush cleat anywhere public.
On a programme the win is one system everywhere, so an install crew does the same thing a hundred times and every frame ends up on the same line.
What we will talk you out of
Glass above head height. UV glazing in a room with no daylight. A nominal size that nearly fits the document. A moulding line that is being discontinued.
And printing your artwork — we do not do it, and we would rather be plainly good at the frame than vague about both.
