The Complete Buyer’s Guide to Custom Picture Frames

Frames are compared on the moulding because that is the visible part. None of the four questions below is about the moulding.

What grade is the mount board?

Acidic board burns a brown line into the artwork over a few years.

Alkaline-buffered and lignin-free prevents it, for very little money.

Does the glazing filter UV?

Ordinary glass does not. Dye-based prints fade wherever the light falls.

Ask, and ask for it in writing.

How deep is the rebate?

Glazing plus mount plus artwork plus backing all sit in one lip.

A stack deeper than the lip means a frame that will not close.

How does it hang, and how heavy is it?

Past A2 with glass, a sawtooth hanger is not adequate.

Ask for the finished weight before delivery day, not after.

Then choose the finish

Enjoyable, and safely secondary to the four above.
