Conservation & Archival Frames

Two things inside a frame decide whether what is in it looks the same in fifteen years, and neither of them is visible once the frame is closed. The first is the mount board. Ordinary board is acidic, and within a few years it prints a brown line into the edge of whatever it touches — mat burn — which cannot be undone.

The second is the glazing. Ordinary glass passes ultraviolet, and anything printed with dye ink fades from the top down, wherever the daylight actually lands. It is why one corner of a framed print goes pale while the rest looks fine and nobody can explain it.

Alkaline-buffered, lignin-free board and UV-filtering glazing are the fix, they cost a fraction of what the moulding costs, and they are almost never on a quote. They are on every one of ours, with a plain sentence about when they are not worth paying for.
